It's Surf Season in Surigao!

The Philippines has  a long coastline which make the country a potential for water sports. Surf camps have long been established in La Union and Baler. Siargao has also been developed as one of the prime surfing destinations locally.

While local coastal communities have enjoyed the sport for quite some time now. It has only been recently that more surf camps are established to promote ecotourism ventures in our coasts.

Newly established surf camps are found in coasts of: Quezon and Lanuza in Surigao. Northern Samar has potential but we'll have to wait til they push through with a surf camp. These surf camps, I believe, are important elements of tourism projects to help promote responsible tourism and community involvement in the protection and management of coastal resources.

I have yet to learn how to surf. I just hope my reflexes are not too slow by that time. Surfing requires balance, flexibility and foresight. One must also learn water safety skills  to survive a knockdown - which can be nasty and deadly.

Perhaps, a safer alternative is skim boarding. The skills are similar but its done in shallow water.

Local accommodations in Lanuza include Bed and Breakfast ranging from 150 to 200 per night. Local transport include habal-habal, trikes and jeepneys. From Butuan City, Lanuza, Tandag is 7 hours via Surigao (including transfers).
